Anyone remember the old days of fandom, when what you had were a few cyclostyled pages typed up in Courier font, and your only chance of getting hold of them was if you attended fan conventions and physically bought a copy?
Then the internet happened. At first, it was still basic documents typed out in Courier and shared on small mailing lists. Then FF.net came along, and bigger, better fandom mailing lists, Yahoo Groups, LiveJournal, and Tumblr – all sites where writers hung out and exchanged stories. Sites like DeviantArt grew alongside those devoted to writing, giving artists a place to share their work, too.
And, of course, there was YouTube.
For many of us, YouTube became the only place we could catch glimpses of our heroes, unless we were lucky enough to get hold of creaky, low-quality DVDs taken from someone’s ancient VHS recordings of Lancer being shown on Canadian TV in the 70s.
But YouTube also became the place where people took that footage, and got creative with it. They took their favourite songs and added Lancer footage, taking a new look at characters through a fresh lens. It reminds us that fanfiction or drawn/painted images aren’t the only way fans love their favourite show and create new art around it.
Sadly, not all survive. YouTube does crack down now and again on what they see as copyright violations, and some of the best of the older ones have been taken down. But there are still a lot a darn good fan vids about, so turn up the volume and settle in.
Enjoy!
